…a samurai is a total human being, whereas a man who is completely absorbed in his technical skill has degenerated into a ‘function’, one cog in a machine.

It is curious to note the old sea-margins of human thought. Each subsiding century reveals some new mystery; we build where monsters used to hide themselves.

quote

“…”

It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

Timeline: Transhumanism

transhumanism

Transhumanism posits that technology can help mankind overcome its physical limitations.

Transhumanism is an intellectual movement that embraces technology as the solution to many of the problems facing humanity–the ultimate goal being to modify the human experience and the human body beyond its current limitations.

This union of man and machine is not without its critics–some of whom point out the dangers of tampering with the boundaries laid upon humanity by the environment and the universe at large–as well as the shady ethical avenues mankind may decide to explore in the process. Transhumanism may open doors to totalitarian control measures that could serve to dominate rather than liberate humanity.

The movement poses deeper philosophical questions as well. If the augmentation of the human experience is such that humans can potentially live forever, expand their consciousness, perform astounding physical feats, and more–does this process represent a new phase in human evolution?

Perhaps only time will tell.

quote

“…”

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded sense of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse… A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares about more than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever-renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other.

— John Stuart Mill, The Contest In America
